Step 1: Confirm Your Wax Specs

Step 2: Verify the Heat Source Method
You have three options for melting on any scale, and your choice impacts timeline and safety:
- Double boiler (stovetop). Good for test batches (under 5 lbs). Slow, but most controlled.
- Electric wax melter. What I'd recommend for 15–20 lbs+. Consistent temps, less hands-on.
- Microwave. Please don't. Uneven heating = hot spots = fire risk (note to self: never again).

Step 4: Add Scent and Embed Items at the Right Moment
Temperature matters here too. Add fragrance oil at about 175–185°F—too hot and the scent burns off, too cool and it won't mix evenly. Use gel-safe fragrance oils only (standard candle fragrances may cloud the gel).
Embedded items (like dried flowers or decorative sand) should go into the container before pouring. Pour at 185–200°F, in a thin stream to avoid air pockets. Most people pour too fast and get bubbles... then blame the wax quality.
People think cheap wax causes bubbles. Actually, pouring speed and temperature mismatches cause bubbles—the cheaper wax just fails to hide your mistakes.
Step 5: Let It Cure—And Don't Rush It
Gel wax requires 24–48 hours to fully set. Rushing this step (especially if you're on a deadline) leads to uneven surfaces and caved-in centers (mental note: schedule curing time into your production calendar).
I'm not an industrial chemist or logistics specialist, so I can't speak to what happens at the molecular level. What I can tell you from a procurement perspective: building in 48 hours of curing time reduced our rework rate from 1 in 8 units to 0 in our last batch of 200.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Skipping a test batch. We made 10 test candles before committing to 200. Found 3 issues (cloudiness, sinking embed, fragrance fade) before production. Saved an estimated $1,200 in rework.
- Assuming "standard" means the same thing. "Standard gel wax" varies by supplier. Get the exact melt/cure spec in writing. In my first year I made this mistake with a printer vendor—cost us a $600 reprint.
